Splunk remains the heavyweight champion for search and analysis capabilities. If your compliance requirements demand sophisticated log analysis and retention, Splunk handles that better than anyone. The learning curve and cost are both steep, but the power is unmatched.

CloudWatch works well if you’re primarily AWS with occasional multi-cloud workloads. You can ship logs from other providers into CloudWatch, though you lose some of the native integration benefits. The cost model is more predictable for AWS-heavy shops.

Implementation That Actually Works

Start with an assessment of your current needs, specifically your log volume, retention requirements, and query patterns. A startup generating gigabytes daily has different needs than an enterprise generating terabytes.

Plan your log shipping architecture carefully. Every logging solution requires agents or forwarders at each source. Design this layer for reliability—lost logs during an outage means flying blind when you need visibility most.

Monitor and optimize continuously because log costs can spiral unexpectedly. Implement sampling for high-volume, low-value logs. Use different retention tiers for different log types. Set up alerts on ingestion rates so you catch runaway logging before it blows your budget.

The best centralized logging solution is the one your team actually uses effectively. Fancy features don’t matter if your engineers default to SSH and grep because the tool is too complex. Choose based on your team’s capabilities, not just feature comparisons.
